A group of butterflies is called a kaleidoscope. It is derived from the word kalos (beautiful), eïdos (form), and skopeïn (to view); translating to "observer of beautiful forms". The name comes from the optical instrument that creates a unique color display using mirrors. It is similar to the beautiful array of patterns and vibrant colors their fluttering wings create. When seen, it is a reminder that beauty can be seen within constant change and flux.

Butterflies and flowers have a symbiotic relationship. Butterflies primarily feed on nectar in blooming flowers, and flowers are benefited by pollen being distributed by the butterflies. Because of this mutualism, these two organisms are often seen in perfect harmony.
